However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of the inscriptions that can be swapped.    Leveling    Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a set number of times before being "leveled out." This process can take up to two hours, and costs the same amount of materials.
